Revelers have the opportunity to taste over 100 different vintages of Franken wine, guaranteeing the chance of finding a favorite.

They usually have coffee and cakes too. Lunch is locally catered and very good with a choice of 3 different meals. Nussdorf is North of Landau. The winery is on the west side of town. Wilhelmstraßenfest

What: Wilhelmstraßenfest (AKA Theatrium)
Where: Wilhelmstraße (duh!), Wiesbaden
When: 10 - 11 June 2005

The Skinny: A co-worker writes...

This fest is possibly the best fest in all of Germany, and trust me, I have been to a few. The fest is free. Usually they have four large stages set up for live music. Wilhelm Straße is two blocks from the American Arms Hotel on Frankfurter Straße and runs all the way to the Casino (Kurhaus) and stadt theater. The arts and crafts offered for sale are some of the best I have ever seen. In the past they have had street performers throughout both days. Great food, wine, Sekt, bier and mixed drinks.

Now that I am starting to think about it, you will want to check the mixed drinks stand with the Brazilin girls shaking it up. When I start to drool on myself, Maggie usually drags me away so I can eventually regain some sort of composure.

Anyway, DO NOT MISS THIS FEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest

What: The Stuttgart Spring Fest
Where: Canstatt Wasen (Stuttgart)
When: 16 April - 8 May 2005

The Skinny: Stuttgart hosts one the biggest Frühlingsfest in Baden-Württemberg. It’s only half the size of the Cannstatter Volksfest in the Fall, but a beer tent is a beer tent, and they’ve got at least one. The website seems to be down as of late, but there is a little bit of info on the Cannstatter site.

How to get there: From the Stuttgart Hauptbanhof, take the following Strassenbahns one stop to the Bad Cannstatt stop: S1 in the direction of Plochingen, S2 in the direction of Schorndorf, S3 in the direction of Backnang. Then follow the crowds.

Heidelberg Kastenlauf

Date: Unknown, sometime in April
Time: 11:30am (meet up), 12:00pm (start)

Rules: Finish race and finish beer (but not in that particular order). Teams of two run from the Koenigstuhl to just across the Neuenheim bridge with a case of beer. The winner is the duo that crosses the finish line first... with an empty case. The event is mid-April, but the details are still a bit hazy (as will be you if you participate). I will pass on more info as I get it...

Beer requirements: 0.33 liters (kleine)/case of 24 bottles

Judges: None. As in most German activities, the reward for finishing this race is honor. Of course, you could easily cheat and dump beer, but then you won't have the satisfaction of knowing you honestly accomplished the feat. If this isn't enough to deter the cheaters, this race is totally devoid of any type of material reward. You don't even get a dinky "Certificate of..." signifying that on that day you got wasted and ran down a hill.

Happy training!
